“With the food prices right now and as they continue to rise, I worry that that's going to cause people to go for unhealthy options on the shelf because produce is costly,”

— Nicole, M2M Volunteer

Moms shouldn’t have to choose between feeding their families healthy food and other essential living costs.

That’s why, this holiday season, our goal is to raise $80,000 for Mom2Mom’s grocery support program. And, thanks to a group of generous matching donors, gifts made before December 14 will have DOUBLE the impact!

Yes! I want to help support food security

Currently, each participant mom receives between $150-$250/month in grocery gift cards depending on the number of children in her care. With the $80,000, we will increase the grocery gift cards by $25/month. This will make a big difference as it helps offset rising food costs.

“[Food insecurity] is a serious problem in Canada that negatively impacts physical, mental, and social health, and costs our healthcare system considerably.”

— PROOF, Food Insecurity Policy Research

The Long-term Impacts of Food Insecurity

  • Increased risk of developing asthma, depression, and suicidal ideation
  • Poorer physical health and vulnerability to chronic conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, arthritis and more
  • Predisposition for poor mental health

Meet Destiny

When we hear statistics like “1 in 3 single moms in Canada are food insecure”, it can be difficult to grasp the real women behind these numbers. Women like Destiny who want the best for their children and will do everything they can to make it happen.

After immigrating to Canada in 2015, Destiny was introduced to Mom2Mom through a neighbour. She joined the program in early 2022.

Currently, Destiny is working hard to get her Canadian citizenship. What motivates her is providing a better future for her two children: her six-year-old daughter, Sadie, and her 21-month-old son, Ashton. Balancing the competing demands of parenting young children, being the sole financial provider, and trying to get her citizenship is no easy task.

But thanks to the support of generous donors like you, she doesn’t have to do it alone.

“[The grocery cards] help a lot,” Destiny urges.

When they aren’t stressed about food, moms like Destiny can focus on their future goals. Goals that will ultimately benefit their children. After she gets her Canadian Citizenship, Destiny plans to return to school and complete her long-term care aid training.

“I just really admire her strength and that she’s got a plan and a vision. I’m super excited to support her on this journey in whatever capacity I can,”

— Nicole, M2M Volunteer
